Dr. Robert Pedowitz has settled a whistleblower lawsuit with the University of California at Los Angeles for $10 million after alleging that the university ignored conflicts of interest related to the Medtronic Infuse Bone Graft. The school employed Dr. Jeffrey Wang, who is being sued for malpractice after accepting nearly $500,000 from Medtronic to promote the controversial Infuse bone graft device.
Dr. Pedowitz stepped down from his position as chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery after he says his complaints of financial ties between companies and school-employed doctors went ignored. Pedowitz said other doctors at the university also conspired to present false information about him for his efforts to sever kickbacks from medical companies such as Medtronic, which gave doctors hundreds of thousands of dollars.
More than 1,000 patients have filed Medtronic Infuse lawsuits after the device caused severe complications. Medtronic Infuse side effects include nerve damage, excess bone growth, trouble breathing and death.
