Becky Anderson was awarded $30 million in a malpractice lawsuit after a plastic Medtronic device caught fire in her throat during routine surgery. The plastic tube designed to keep her throat open went up in flames when a laser touched it, causing the hospital to immediately rush Anderson into emergency surgery.
Anderson can no longer speak or breathe on her own due to the damage. Medtronic, however, was not found liable due to the doctor’s negligence, and all of the awarded money came from the hospital.
Medtronic has a history with suspect medical devices, including the Medtronic Infuse bone graft device, which stimulates bone growth. Patients who received the device have complained of severe Infuse side effects, including excessive bone growth, cancer and retrograde ejaculation in men.
